Office hours: the hour immediately after lecture and the hour immediately after discussion. Just come up to me at the end of lecture or discussion. If your question is brief I can answer it on the spot, otherwise, come back with me to my office (Van Vleck 816). You can expect to find me in my office 1:10-2:10 TR.
Discussion section structure
- 10 percent of the course grade comes from the discussion section.
- I will put you (somewhat randomly) in groups of two or three. You are collectively responsible for turning in a complete assignment.
Expectations for submitted work:
- Your grade on the homework is the grade of your group.
- You will be graded on completion, not correctness. As a group you should do all the problems for each section. (The rationale for this is that the exam problems will be taken almost verbatim from the problems in the book.)
- Each week you should submit the homework for the (usually three) sections that were covered prior to the previous lecture.
- Your group should submit the work for each section separately.
- Your group's homework for a given section should be stapled together:
  1. A cover sheet (if you have trouble printing this you can improvise one),
  2. Student A's work,
  3. Student B's work,
  4. Student C's work.
- Problem numbers should be in a column.
- The cover sheet is a summary of your work. The cover sheet should have the names of the students in the group and should indicate which student solved which problem. (Put a circle in the column of the student who was responsible for the problem and put a slash through the circle if the problem was completed. If other students also worked the same problem put check marks in their columns.)
- I suggest the following:
  Suppose that sections 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3 are due.
  Let student A be the point person for section 1.1.
  Let student B be the point person for section 1.2.
  Let student C be the point person for section 1.3.
  When you prepare your work to hand it in:
  Hand your work for section 1.1 to student A.
  Hand your work for section 1.2 to student B.
  Hand your work for section 1.3 to student C.
  Student A creates a common cover sheet for section 1.1, staples the work under this first cover sheet, circles his own name, and hands it in. Students B and C do analogously.
Admonitions for student work:
- Students who meet for discussion on Tuesday should work out a time between Friday's lecture and Tuesday's discussion when they can meet to discuss homework problems.
- Students who meet for discussion on Thursday should work out a time between Monday's lecture and Thursday's discussion when they can meet to discuss homework problems.
- Mark problems that you do not understand with circled questions and circled question marks.
- Do not try to hide what you do not understand; Hilight it!
- When you submit your work, please (1) hilight any questions that are left unresolved and (2) cross out questions that have been resolved so that I can focus my response on your real questions and not waste time responding to issues you already understand!
- When you meet as a group you should tell one another which problems were routine and which problems were more challenging. Everyone in the group should attempt the most challenging problems! Your goal is to ensure that everyone in the group is able to do all the problems.
- When we meet for discussion you should expect to get the questions answered that your group was unable to answer.
