Not only do they occasionally wash the dishes, but they do have extra garbage bags, and once every week or two they go so far as to remove the garbage bag from the container, and perhaps one of us will remove it to the dumpster soon. I'm not sure where the dumpster is; I have not gotten so far in my ramblings yet.

Woke up after about 11 hours of sleep still tired, but felt that we should try to move to local time. Moved very slowly, finishing breakfast at about 11:30. Seemed rather cold. Discovered after we really woke up that the steam heat was not on, and Holland is not a particularly warm place, especially at night. At breakfast we discovered that the muesli we bought at the local supermarket was good, but that the milk carton leaks. After breakfast, read The Hunting of the Snark to keep awake, but it was no good, I went and slept until 12:30. when I was awakened by the sound of a tremendous crashing downstairs. I ascertained that Kim was not involved and did not query further.

The desk chairs here were made for people with much narrower backs than I have; at least, it hurts to lean against the back. If that weren't my normal typing pose, I wouldn't mind so much. Fortunately, a previous inhabitant appears to have left a pillow in the room; I'll try that. ...It's a bit better, though it makes the seat a little short. I'll live.

The day keeps marching quickly on for these two sleepy people; when Kim finishes her nap, we intend a trip into town to look for a few things for purchase.

We invited Kim's classmate Uijung to accompany us on our shopping trip, and the three of us went shopping. We found the market at about closing time (5:00 pm), but at least we know where it is now. On the way there, we happened to see that there will be a cello concert Wednesday night and purchased tickets. I bought phone cord and a CD case at an electronics store and noted that prices on computers and printers, at least, are quite significantly higher here than in the US. Printers appeared to be about double US prices (yes, after accounting for the difference between guilders and dollars). We had Indian food for dinner, then did a little bit of grocery shopping before we headed home.

For the first time, we took the 12 bus from town to the university; every other time, we have taken the 11 bus from town to university, and the 12 bus from university to town. We found that the 12 bus runs a strange circular route in that direction. That's OK, though--on that route, we found a Turkish restaurant. We have also seen Moroccan and several other specialties near the town center. I think we'll eat well while we are here.
