This is not a glider put up for winter storage or put off to the side for the day.

The pilot was attempting a 500K flight; he began a bit too early and after about 40K found himself low and without lift. He positioned himself for an off-field landing, and during his approach was momentarily distracted. His left wingtip snagged the tree, and he dropped to a carrier landing on the roof. When he got out of the cockpit, the CG shift caused the glider to tip off the roof.

This was a skilled, experienced, careful pilot. He was not intending to have an accident. A moment's distraction was all it took.
