Examples of Prague Architecture.
The examples of architecture shown here are not "representative." They are simply the ones I was able to reach and to photograph in 2 days. I made a special attempt to photograph all the examples of cubist architecture that I could get to -- and have forgotten the names of some of the buildings -- and tried to get examples of Art Nouveau specifically; but otherwise I simply recorded images that stood out because of lighting or ornament.
- Architectural Detail. A collection of ornament, form, etc. not no whole buildings.
- Art Nouveau. The buildings shown are mostly in Wenceslas "Square" (really a long boulevard) and the Jewish Quarter, a morning's easy walk.
- Town House. This is a special building that is a showcase of Czech artists.
- Mainly Baroque. A collection of older buildings from the middle ages and later, mostly in the Old Town area of Prague.
- Cubism. Prague is special for the number of buildings by architects with Cubist inspiration. YOu may wish to have a review of Czech Cubism.
- The Black Madonna, originally a department store, is named for the statue that's enshrined on its NE corner, saved from the building taken down to erect this one.
- Hodek apartments.
- I have forgotten the name of this Cubist House, but it's worth a look.
- A nice CubistOffice stand along the Vltava River under the NW corner of Vysehrad Castle.
- The PAS building is one of the most delightfully ugly pieces in existence, a Cubist castle.
- Below the west side of Vysehrad Castle is a very nice Cubist triplex.
- Prague has some nice Modern and Post-Modern buildings, but they look awfully stark next to baroque buildings.
