The hungry wall in Mala Strana, Prague.
Built in 1360 under the direction of Charles IV -- Czechia was suffering economically, and Charles hired anyone who was willing to lay stone. The people worked for their dinner, a useless wall was built, and no one felt beholden, a monument to human nature.

Far off to the north, a line of Soviet-era apartment buildings wall off the landscape. There are no tours of Soviet architechture in Prague no web sites devoted to its majesties. But... are these uglier than American Suburban kitsch? It's a close call.
