Just to show those of you who visit in the summer that a windy 40-degree October day has its blessings -- easy parking and no crowds.

About a dozen hotels and two towers leer at the falls and gorge from the Canadian side of the river. None are on the US side -- the view just isn't that good, and besides, who wants to look at Canadians?

It is not completely clear why it would be profitable to build a 300-foot tower overlooking a sight that you can see perfectly well by walking up to it. Any why, wanting to have a look from on high, you would not build a ritzy hotel underneath it like all your neighbors, did, but... this is why I'm not in charge of the world.

At the end of the falls, people stand in yellow rain gear who have paid several dollars to descend in an elevator, walk behind the falls, and stand in the mist. We observed their example and did not emulate it. It was a cold day, and a cold drenching didn't seem alluring.

The American Niagara in perspective. Note the bridgelike observation tower at the north end of the falls, which the US had to build so that not everyone would emigrate to Canada just to get a good view, and so that we could actually look at our own falls. The thin red lines among the rocks at the right (south) end of the falls are a walkway and stairs for adventurous tourists who want to descend from Dufferin Island for a good shower.

Never content to let beauty lie unmolested, the Engineers blew away an entire island in order to create room for a power plant above Niagara Falls, in the distant background upriver. The view is to the S, from the outlet of the power spillway.
