Juneau is set among the coastal mountains, beside an estuary.
This view looks NE, toward the city as it is approached from the sea.

Eagles are as common along the seacoast in Alaska as are crows in the midwest.
But eagles are prettier. Their diets are similar.

This is either a yawl or a ketch, depending on whether the wheel is located ahead of
or behind the mizzen mast. I can't tell.

These cruise ships are really huge: they dwarf the town...

From the perspective of downtown Juneau, the MS Amsterdam has a massive rump.
...um... stern. These things are hotels that float. Phl K was told by a ship's officer that
its sister ship weathered 60-foot waves coming from Alaska last fall. Some water came
in through unexpected places, like down the elevator shafts that are ventilated through
the roof 110 feet above waterline. But the ship did fine. He didn't comment on the
condition of the passengers. We assume that the cooks didn't need to prepare a
massive banquet that night.

From the top of the tram the boats still dominate the Juneau cityscape. One is sending
tourists to the city via a tender. That little speck is a 150-person lifeboat that may
have 100 people for transfer to shore.
