Your Goal - AASI

Notes:

For pilots having medical conditions that are disqualifying but not incapacitating it is possible to receive a “special-issuance” medical certificate after physician review of the medical data.

In the past, all such review was done within the FAA. As pilots have aged, this overburdened the FAA.

For well-defined stable medical conditions, the FAA has created guidelines by which AMEs can issue after reviewing the pilots' current medical data – AME-Assisted Special Issuance = AASI.

1: FAA physicians provide the first special issuance and determine the conditions of further issuance.

2: These conditions are spelled out in - The letter authorization for special issuance

- The specification sheet spelling out exactly what medical data is to be submitted.

The FAA sends a copy to the airman's last AME (in case you lose yours) and expects pilots to keep these safe: the authorization letter must be with the pilot in the airplane, and the specification sheet should be provided to the treating physician to guide reports.
