As long as you're having the hungry people build a useless wall, why not include a useless balcony and gun ports? ..."Um..., may I ask which side we will shoot towards?" "Away from town?" "Ok, good idea."

Hungry Wall, Petrin Park, Prague. July 10, 2004

Petrin Tower is a miniature replica of the Eiffel Tower.

Useless battlements on the Hungry Wall, which doesn't separate anything from anything else, just winds through the park, a monument to the virtue of hard work and to the idea that people shouldn't get anything free, especially if they're poor.

The hungry wall, winding through the woods of Petrin park, Prague.

The funicular at its midpoint. A stop, a little cafe, a chance to change your mind about walking all the way. The funicular could have been designed so that this stop was exactly at the mid-point, where the track divides to let the cars pass; then both cars would stop once. But no, it's just above the mid-point. Each car stops twice, once for its own passengers and once for the other's. Was this to control fares? (your transit pass gets you on; seems unlikely.) To reduce construction costs? (Twould be a small savings.) Or just a case of yet one more time not thinking it through? (Seems likely.)

The Petrin tower looms over the Hungry Wall. A Japanese tourist in a red shirt wonders if she's my interest. Maybe she should have been.
