This ~120-ft tall cruise ship shows the scale of the Marjorie Glacier approximately.
We were told that this glacier is 250 ft tall along its face; taking into account
perspective and our own view, I'd estimate the exposed face to be over 150 ft at
least, because we could not see over its top from the top deck of our ship..

The tiny splash on the face of the Margerie Glacier is from a piece of the face sliding
off its 250-foot-tall face. The next photos show the fan of floe ice that developed
from this.

Margerie Glacier; the big splash is smaller; a fan of floe ice has begun to spread
out from the base of the glacier.

Another bunch of ice has made the splash bigger; the fan of floe ice is swimming
fast away from its base.

No more ice is falling from its face, and the fan of floe ice is spreading rapidly.

In just a few minutes, the floe ice from the Margerie Glacier has formed a fan a half-
mile across.

These are good-sized chunks of ice falling into the water, and they are so large
that they fall slowly, giving the creaky old photographer plenty of time to press the
shutter. The field of floe ice in the foreground was quickly made by a very large
part of the glacier's face that slouged away as we approached.

The house-sized piece hits the water with a house-sized spash.
We couldn't get anyone to stand under this to show the scale....

A condo-sized hunk follows, created a very large splash. This sounds just like
thunder.

Grand Pacific Glacier is a black shoulder of ice about a mile wide and about 250 ft
high that is just east of the white, active Margerie glacier. I put this up mainly so
you'll understand that glaciers, like people, are not uniformly photogenic.

OK, it's just a weird iceberg.

Just as we hove to, a big section of the Marjerie Glacier sloughed, creating a huge
floe of ice cubes.
