Oxygen is required as fuel for every cellular process; it donates the electrons needed for energy-transfer reactions. Most importantly (to the passengers and the folks on the ground, if not the pilot) the brain requires a continuous large supply of oxygen and glucose. Hypoxia occurs via several routes:
