Getting Ready for Special Issuance
How Can I Know Which Conditions the FAA Cares About?
- Google “site:faa.gov "medical conditions"
- AOPA.ORG -> Flight Planning -> Medical Certification
Clear, well-organized, current, quotable, readily available.
If you have a condition that's addressed here, print out the relevant text and take it to your doctor.
- Tell your doctor that this is a legal process: every base must be touched. (Doctors tend to give approximately what's wanted, and tend to give opinions rather than data. The FAA wants data; the docs there don't have a care for your doc's opinion. And they want relevant data. Doctors, not clerks, will be reviewing the records, and they're annoyed by BS.)
- Example: If you have high blood pressure, take the Hypertension Evaluation Worksheet with you to your doctor. And take the completed form to your AME
Don't argue with the FAA; just give them the data they ask for.
- But “all medical records” is legalese. What it really means is “all records that reveal your medical status.” Don't send nursing notes and other chaff.
- Your doctor, knowing doctors will review this, can help select what to send.
